Follistatin

[:en]Follistatin is a protein that increases muscle mass by suppressing myostatin.  It is found in the skeletal muscle, and quite high in the amino acid, cystine. It also contains carbohydrates. It has gained popularity in the bodybuilding community as a supplement to potentially increase lean tissue mass, quickly.

How Does It Work?
Follistatin binds to and inhibits transforming growth factor (TGF) peptides, such as myostatin which regulates muscle growth. It also suppresses the pituitary gland\’s secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This limits muscle growth, recovery and normal hormone function.

Does Follistatin Actually Build Muscle?
Although it may build muscle, it may not necessarily do so in humans. Most studies support its growth in rodents, and there is no formal clinical research to support its use in humans.

The Real Deal
The effects of follistatin may have negative effects. For example, FSH levels that are too low may negatively impact reproductive capabilities.
It is extremely expensive with no real numerical amount shown being directly useful or beneficial.  Some have claimed to experiment with 200+mcg with no effect, and those that have reported effects are generally intaking 4000+ calories, therefore, having it attributed to Follistatin is extremely difficult.  For the cost of this supplement, one may wonder if this is truly worth it?
